Paul Smith

Expertise

Consistently recognized by Best Lawyers for Canada, Intellectual Property (IP) Law, Paul advises individuals and businesses seeking to protect their IP in Canada and worldwide through patents, trademarks, copyright and industrial design.  He has extensive experience in all IP-related areas, including:

  • litigation, both enforcing his clients’ IP against infringers, and defending those who’ve been accused of infringing others’ IP rights,
  • securing protection, by preparing and prosecuting patent, trademark, design and copyright applications in Canada and abroad, and
  • strategic IP portfolio planning for clients who are unsure what to patent or which trademarks to register.

Paul also offers a unique IP package for start-ups, in recognition that the building of an IP portfolio is a critical element to the path to success.

Philosophy

Paul believes in professionalism and in providing prompt and effective advice and advocacy, and in actually understanding where a client is coming from and what they are looking for.

Something Special

In later years, he has become, somewhat to his surprise, an avid sportsman.  He was a competitive curler in his younger years, dabbled in skydiving and paragliding, and plays hockey or squash a few times a week. He is now a novice kiteboarder.  Fluently bilingual, Paul easily advocates for clients in French when the need arises. He is member of the Law Societies of both British Columbia and Upper Canada (i.e. Ontario) and holds the Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) designation in both provinces.

What Community Means to Paul

“Community” is the collection of relationships that support a person’s life and living activities.

Paul is a lawyer with Smiths IP.
